Sacramento Sea Kayakers (formerly Sierra Sea
Kayakers) was the vision of our Founder and first President, Kathy McCarley.
SSK started out as an informal group getting together for paddles, but the
numbers grew rapidly and in 2003 we started to formalize the group into a
club, and wrote up the by-laws and club policies.
Our
Mission Statement was created:
“To promote the Sport of Sea Kayaking in a
manner that places emphasis on Safety and Personal Responsibility.”
… And our first Logo was created by Cyndi
Murdoch.
The first Board members were as follows:
Kathy McCarley, President
Bob Shertz, Vice President
Richard Welch, Treasurer
Krista Harvell, Secretary
John Terry, Member at Large
Kathy moved out of state, so the next year
was in constant change with Richard Welch being President for a couple of
months, and Jeff Bedford took over for him for awhile, and finally Krista
Harvell moved into the Presidency. All the Board Members switched positions
around during the year. John Terry remained as Member at Large through all
the changes, and Bob Shertz became our Webmaster. After settling, the new
board members were as follow:
The Board members in 2004 were:
Krista
Harvell, President
Marty Dibble, Vice President
Richard Welch, Treasurer
Murdoch, Secretary
Terry, Member at Large
In 2008, SSK was due for another major
change. We officially changed our name to Sacramento Sea Kayakers to better
identify us with our geographic area and to avoid confusion with another
kayaking group. This led to designing our current web site and logo for the
new SSK. Bob Shertz retired, but did the templates for the set up of our
site and Doug Jensen took over the Webmaster position. The current logo was
designed by Marty Dibble and Joyce Bayer.

Also in 2008, two Board Members’
terms were up, so a new treasurer and secretary were voted for.
The new Board Members as of
2008:
Justine Bunnell, Secretary
Joyce Bayer, Treasurer
Krista Harvell, President
Marty Dibble, Vice President

John Terry, Member at Large
